OMG, I couldn’t be more excited! The contractor sent the first pictures from the bathroom renovation. This is major! Here’s the floor entirely gone (and you can see that quite a bit of the walls are log construction too):
This is the south wall where the sink (left) and toilet (right) used to be:
The size of the niche where the pipes go is surprising large. I don’t really see a good way to take advantage of that, since it’s right behind where the toilet goes. Sadly it will probably just have to be walled over. Here is part of the west wall with the window:
And here’s the other half of that west wall, with a closer shot of the niche:
And last but not least, here is the north wall where the vanity and washing machine will be:
You can really see the roofline clearly in this shot. I find it fascinating to see how the bathroom was added on.
Renovation Tangent 
I keep noticing how beautiful the ceiling is!
Will the niche still be *completely* behind the toilet (so you couldn’t access it at all)? If not, maybe some tiny storage shelves across from the pipe…

Sadly, it turns out that the “niche” is much smaller than it looks in the photograph, according to the contractor. My guess is that trying to make use of it would end up visually messy and not very practical. I’m thinking the best thing to do is wall it in; the wall in front of it will be built out up to about waist height for the wall-mounted toilet, which will make a nice shelf about 10 inches deep or so, kind of like in my old bathroom from before I moved to Oslo: https://renovationtangent.wordpress.com/2017/04/06/bathroom-progress-2/

I forgot to add that the ceiling has already been ripped out. it will be re-insulated and then drywalled and painted. But not to worry: there is MUCH pine everywhere else in the house!
